What's so special about iron removers?

Updated: Mar 17, 2022

When your brake pads grind against the rotor of your vehicle, tiny particles become airborne and find their way into the pores of your vehicle -- that’s right, your car has pores just like your skin does! These particles are generally made of iron, but can also contain carbon or other metals. These particles are called brake dust and buildup on your vehicle. Over time, they start to cause rust to form on your vehicle and cause the metal to start changing colors. Not only does this hurt the car’s appearance, but it’ll continue to get worse until the iron particles are removed. An iron remover car spray helps eliminate those particles so you can finally see and feel the difference in your car’s paint. When the iron remover is sprayed onto the car, the solution will change color when it comes in contact with iron -- letting you know it works.

When to Use Iron Remover on Car

An iron remover goes a long way in helping you decontaminate your car from the iron particles that build up, but it’s not something that needs to be done often. In fact, most car owners should expect to do this 1-2 times per year -- especially if you’re used to dealing with snow on a yearly basis.

While many people confuse iron removers with clay bars, the processes are completely different. Clay bars use a sticky surface to pull contaminants out from the car’s pores. On the other hand, iron removers chemically dissolve the iron contaminants that can’t be pulled out by the clay bar. With that being said, the two processes often compliment each other when decontaminating a vehicle.

Since the iron remover is easy and only requires you to spray and rinse, most people choose to do this first. Once completed, the clay bar can help remove anything that remains. While most people like to wash the car before using the iron remover, it’s not necessary. It is necessary, however, that you wash the car after using iron remover. Failure to do so could result in staining the paint. That’s why it’s important to know when to use iron remover on car exteriors.
